Keys

This month's camera club theme was "keys." I had some great ideas, that I just didn't get around to shooting. When I saw the category, I immediately thought of the maintenance guy's huge key ring with a gazillion keys hanging from his belt. In my mind's eye, I pictured a very small depth of field and grungy processing on the cropped ring. Well, I didn't take my camera to work, so I didn't get that one.

Here's what I did end up shooting: the key cabinet in our garage, the keys on my saxophone, and the keys on my grandma's piano.

Christmas Spirit

As I said a few days ago, I plan to post some of my photos from my five month absence. Today you get to enjoy our Christmas photos :) I had an especially good time taking the pictures of the boys. For the family shot, I forgot to shut of the overhead light. I was using my Speedlight in a softbox, but it completely slipped my mind. The white balance was all crazy, and I couldn't fix it. I didn't reattempt taking the family picture again, because everyone was getting cranky, myself included. All things considered, I was pleased with the end results.

Great Granny

My Mom and Dad stopped by last night for a visit. Dad brought over a flash drive loaded with old pictures from his side of the family. There was one of my great grandma. I remember her as a wiry, old lady who had a parakeet that flew loose around the house. When I visited as a child, much to my amazement, she chewed snuff. Not the shredded chewing tobacco, but the powder. Only later did I learn that a lot of Southern women did that. She lived to the age of 96.

This particular picture was take in Columbus, GA in 1918, and Great Granny was about 18 years old at the time. It is kind of funny, because I only remember her with white hair. Anyway, I've posted the original and my meager attempts at restoring it.

The Benefit of Not Posting In Months...

The benefit of not positing for months is that I do actually have some photos saved up to share.  My oldest son and my hubby ran in 5K on Thanksgiving day. My son did really well, and finished in third place for his age group! His time was 28 minutes 53 seconds.

I made him a shirt with a turkey on the front, and the back of the turkey on the back. Across the back, it read, "Eat My Feathers!" Here a few of my favorite photos from the day...

I'm back...

I know that it has been awhile, almost five months. I started a new job in September. Then came the hunting season and the holidays. Things are settling down again. I'm ashamed to say that I haven't had my camera out too much. At any rate, I dragged out all the gear last night to work on the Valentine's Day cards :)  I know there are things that could have come out better, but both boys liked them. Also, I am proud to mention that older son came up with younger son's saying...the little guy had his heart set on having a soldier card. So without further ado...

I don't know if I'll get back to doing a daily post, but I'm definitely going to try to do a weekly one. As always, thanks for stopping by to take a peek.

Halushki

 Chopped cabbage, sauteing in butter.

 Potato Dumpling Batter.

 A finished dumpling.

The finished product, halushki.

Once in awhile I get a craving for halushki. My Mom always made it with homemade noodles, and to this day, that's the only way I'll eat it. If someone makes it with egg noodles, I tend not to eat it at all. Anyway, one of my former patients told me that instead of homemade noodles, she made homemade potato dumplings. She was kind enough to share her recipe, which I used tonight for dinner :) These dumplings add so much flavor. The halushki was delicious and the perfect compliment to the kielbasa.

Macro + Rain = FUN!

I know, I know, you were expecting droplet pictures. Well these are, sort of...Just playing around with how close you can possibly get. (None of these are cropped.) I thought the rain magnifying the writing looked neat.
